Colossians Ch.4: Translation Work

1 οἱ κύριοι, τὸ δίκαιον καὶ τὴν ἰσότητα τοῖς δούλοις παρέχεσθε, εἰδότες ὅτι καὶ ὑμεῖς ἔχετε κύριον ἐν οὐρανῷ.

"Masters, do that which is just and fair to your slaves, knowing that you too have a Master - in Heaven."

- ἰσότητα (N. Accusitive Feminine Singular - ἰσότης, ητος, ἡ) = equality, fairness, that which is equal.
- παρέχεσθε (V. Present Middle Imperitive, 2nd Person Plural, παρέχω) = give (in this case I translated "Give" as "do" to better refelct English idiom.

2 Τῇ προσευχῇ προσκαρτερεῖτε, γρηγοροῦντες ἐν αὐτῇ ἐν εὐχαριστίᾳ, 

"Be persistent in prayer, vigilant - with thanksgiving."

- προσκαρτερεῖτε (V. Present Active Imperitive, 2nd Person Plural- προσκαρτερέω) = devote yourselves, persist, continue steadfast in.
- γρηγοροῦντες (V. Present Active Participle, Nominitve masculine Plural - γρηγορέω) = watching, vigilant.

3 προσευχόμενοι ἅμα καὶ περὶ ἡμῶν, ἵνα ὁ θεὸς ἀνοίξῃ ἡμῖν θύραν τοῦ λόγου, λαλῆσαι τὸ μυστήριον τοῦ Χριστοῦ, δι’ ὃ καὶ δέδεμαι, 

"At the same time, praying for us, that God might open open a door for the Word, to share the mystery of Christ, for whose sake I am in chains."

- ἅμα (adv.) = along with, together with, at the same time
- ἀνοίξῃ (V. Aorist Active Subjunctive, 3rd person singular - ἀνοίγω) = He might open
- θύραν (N. Accusitive Feminine Singular - θύρα, ας, ἡ) = door
- δέδεμαι (V. Perfect Middle Indicitive, 1st person singular - δέω) = I have been bound. 


4 ἵνα φανερώσω αὐτὸ ὡς δεῖ με λαλῆσαι.

"So I might make it clear, as I ought."

- φανερώσω (V. Aorist Active Subjunctive, 1st Person Singular - φανερόω) = I might make it clear.
- δεῖ (V. Present Active Indicitive, 3rd Person Singular - δεῖ) = it behoves, it is necessary


5 Ἐν σοφίᾳ περιπατεῖτε πρὸς τοὺς ἔξω, τὸν καιρὸν ἐξαγοραζόμενοι. 

"Conduct yourselves wisely with outsiders, redeeming the time,"

- περιπατεῖτε (V. Present Active Imperitive, 2nd Person Plural - περιπατέω) = walk
- ἐξαγοραζόμενοι (V. present middle participle, nominitive masculine plural - ἐξαγοράζω) = redeeming
6 ὁ λόγος ὑμῶν πάντοτε ἐν χάριτι, ἅλατι ἠρτυμένος, εἰδέναι πῶς δεῖ ὑμᾶς ἑνὶ ἑκάστῳ ἀποκρίνεσθαι.


"your speech always full of grace, seasoned with salt. so you might know how best to answer each person."

- ἠρτυμένος (V. Perfect Middle Participle, Nominitive Masculine Singular - ἀρτύω) = having been seasoned
- εἰδέναι (V. Perfect Active Infinitive - οἶδα) = to know
- ἑκάστῳ (adj. Dative Masculine singular - ἕκαστος, η, ον) = each

7 Τὰ κατ’ ἐμὲ πάντα γνωρίσει ὑμῖν Τυχικὸς ὁ ἀγαπητὸς ἀδελφὸς καὶ πιστὸς διάκονος καὶ σύνδουλος ἐν κυρίῳ, 

"Tychicus, our beloved brother, faithful servant, and fellow slave in the Lord, will make known to you everything concerning me."


8 ὃν ἔπεμψα πρὸς ὑμᾶς εἰς αὐτὸ τοῦτο ἵνα [b]γνῶτε τὰ περὶ [c]ἡμῶν καὶ παρακαλέσῃ τὰς καρδίας ὑμῶν, 

"I sent him to you for this, so that you might know the things about us, and that he might encourage your hearts."

- ἔπεμψα (v. aorist active indicitive, 1st person singular - πέμπω) = I sent
- παρακαλέσῃ (v. present active subjuctive, 3rd person singular - παρακαλέω) = he might encourage


9 σὺν Ὀνησίμῳ τῷ πιστῷ καὶ ἀγαπητῷ ἀδελφῷ, ὅς ἐστιν ἐξ ὑμῶν· πάντα ὑμῖν γνωρίσουσιν τὰ ὧδε.

"along with Onesimus, our faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you. They will make everything here known to you."


10 Ἀσπάζεται ὑμᾶς Ἀρίσταρχος ὁ συναιχμάλωτός μου, καὶ Μᾶρκος ὁ ἀνεψιὸς Βαρναβᾶ (περὶ οὗ ἐλάβετε ἐντολάς, ἐὰν ἔλθῃ πρὸς ὑμᾶς δέξασθε αὐτόν), 

"My fellow prisoner Aristarchus greets you, and Mark - the cousin of Barnabas, of whom you have received instructions "if he comes to you, welcome him."

- Ἀσπάζεται (v. Present Middle Indicitive, 3rd person singular - ἀσπάζομαι) = Greets
- συναιχμάλωτός (N. Nominitive Masculine Singular - συναιχμάλωτος, ου, ὁ) = fellow prisoner

11 καὶ Ἰησοῦς ὁ λεγόμενος Ἰοῦστος, οἱ ὄντες ἐκ περιτομῆς, οὗτοι μόνοι συνεργοὶ εἰς τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ θεοῦ, οἵτινες ἐγενήθησάν μοι παρηγορία. 

"and Jesus - called Justus, among the circumcsion, these are my only fellow workers for the Kingdom of God, and they have been a comfort to me."

- λεγόμενος (v. present middle participle, nomintitive masculine singular - λέγω) = called
- περιτομῆς (N. Genitive Feminine Singular - περιτομή, ῆς, ἡ) = (the) Circumcision
- ἐγενήθησάν (v. accusitive passive indicitive, 3rd person plural - γίνομαι) = have been
- παρηγορία (n. Nominitive feminine singular - παρηγορία, ας, ἡ) = a comfort.


12 ἀσπάζεται ὑμᾶς Ἐπαφρᾶς ὁ ἐξ ὑμῶν, δοῦλος Χριστοῦ, πάντοτε ἀγωνιζόμενος ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν ἐν ταῖς προσευχαῖς, ἵνα σταθῆτε τέλειοι καὶ πεπληροφορημένοι ἐν παντὶ θελήματι τοῦ θεοῦ. 

"Epaphras, who is one of you, greets you. A servant of Christ Jesus, he is always struggling for you in prayer, in order that you might stand, mature and fully assured, in the will of God."

- ἀσπάζεται (v. present middle indicitive, 3rd person singular - ἀγωνίζομαι) = he greets.
- ἀγωνιζόμενος (v. present middle participle, nominitive masculine singular - ἀγωνίζομαι) = he is struggling
- σταθῆτε (v. aorist passive subjuctive, 2nd person plural - ἵστημι) you might stnad.
- πεπληροφορημένοι (v. perfect passive participle, nominitive masculine plural - πληροφορέω) = fully assured


13 μαρτυρῶ γὰρ αὐτῷ ὅτι ἔχει πολὺν πόνον ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν καὶ τῶν ἐν Λαοδικείᾳ καὶ τῶν ἐν Ἱεραπόλει. 

"Truly, I bare witness to him, that he is greatly concerned about you, and those in Laodicea, and those in Hierapolis."

- πολὺν (adj. accusitive masculine singular - πολύς, πολλή, πολύ) = great
- πόνον (N. accusitive masculine singular - πόνος, ου, ὁ) = concern



14 ἀσπάζεται ὑμᾶς Λουκᾶς ὁ ἰατρὸς ὁ ἀγαπητὸς καὶ Δημᾶς. 

"Luke, the beloved physician, and Demas greet you."

- ἀσπάζεται (v. present middle indicitve, 3rd person singular - ) = greet, greets


15 ἀσπάσασθε τοὺς ἐν Λαοδικείᾳ ἀδελφοὺς καὶ Νύμφαν καὶ τὴν κατ’ οἶκον αὐτῆς ἐκκλησίαν. 

"Greet the brothers and sisters in Laodicea, Nympha and the church which meets in her house."

- ἀσπάσασθε (v. accusitive middle imperitive, 2nd person plural - ) = greet


16 καὶ ὅταν ἀναγνωσθῇ παρ’ ὑμῖν ἡ ἐπιστολή, ποιήσατε ἵνα καὶ ἐν τῇ Λαοδικέων ἐκκλησίᾳ ἀναγνωσθῇ, καὶ τὴν ἐκ Λαοδικείας ἵνα καὶ ὑμεῖς ἀναγνῶτε.

"and when this letter has been read to all of you, have it read to the Laodiceans, and see that you read the letter from Laodicea too."

"and say to Archipus, 'see that the ministry you received from the Lord,
is fulfilled.'"

- εἴπατε (v Aorist active imparitive, 2nd person plural - λέγω) = Say
- παρέλαβες (v Aorist active indicitive, 2nd person singular -παραλαμβάνω) = you have received


18 Ὁ ἀσπασμὸς τῇ ἐμῇ χειρὶ Παύλου. μνημονεύετέ μου τῶν δεσμῶν. ἡ χάρις μεθ’ ὑμῶν.

"This greeting is in my own hand. Remember (me in) my chains. Grace be with you. Amen."

Colossians Ch. 3: Translation Work

1 Εἰ οὖν συνηγέρθητε τῷ Χριστῷ, τὰ ἄνω ζητεῖτε, οὗ ὁ Χριστός ἐστιν ἐν δεξιᾷ τοῦ θεοῦ καθήμενος· 

"So, if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things above, where Christ is sitting, at the right hand of God."

- συνηγέρθητε (V. Aorist Passive Indicative, 2nd Person Plural - συνεγείρω) = you have been raised with.
- ἄνω (adv.) = Above
- ζητεῖτε (V. Present active imperative - 2nd person Ploral - ζητέω) = you seek
- δεξιᾷ (adj, Dative Feminine Singular) = right hand
- καθήμενος (v. Present Passive Participle, Nominative Masculine Singular - κάθημαι) = he is sitting

2 τὰ ἄνω φρονεῖτε, μὴ τὰ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς, 

"The things above, not the things that are on earth."

- φρονεῖτε (V. Present Active Imperative, 2nd person plural - φρονέω) = set your minds on

3 ἀπεθάνετε γάρ, καὶ ἡ ζωὴ ὑμῶν κέκρυπται σὺν τῷ Χριστῷ ἐν τῷ θεῷ· 

"For you died, and your life has been hiden with Christ, in God."

- ἀπεθάνετε (V. Aorist Active Indicative 2nd Person Plural - ἀποθνῄσκω) = you died
- κέκρυπται (V. Perfect Passive Indicative 3rd Person Singular- κρύπτω) = it has been hidden

4 ὅταν ὁ Χριστὸς φανερωθῇ, ἡ ζωὴ ὑμῶν, τότε καὶ ὑμεῖς σὺν αὐτῷ φανερωθήσεσθε ἐν δόξῃ.

"When Christ is revealed, your live too will appear with him, in glory."

- φανερωθῇ (V. Aorist Passive Subjunctive 3rd Person Singular - φανερόω) = he is revealed.
- φανερωθήσεσθε (V. future passive indicative, 2nd Person Plural - φανερόω) = you (pl) will appear.

5 Νεκρώσατε οὖν τὰ μέλη τὰ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς, πορνείαν, ἀκαθαρσίαν, πάθος, ἐπιθυμίαν κακήν, καὶ τὴν πλεονεξίαν ἥτις ἐστὶν εἰδωλολατρία, 

"Therefore, put to death earthly desires, sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and covetousness which is idolatry."

- Νεκρώσατε (v. Accusitive Active Imperative, 2nd person Plural - νεκρόω) = "Put to Death"
- μέλη (N. Accusitive Neuter Plural, μέλος, ους, τό) = bodily member, organ, limb. (I translated this as "the desires," which are a part of the person much like an organ or a limb. This may be some idiom.
- ἀκαθαρσίαν (N. Accusitive Feminine Singular, ἀκαθαρσία, ας, ἡ) = uncleanness, impurity.
- ἐπιθυμίαν (N. Acusitive Neuter Singular, ἐπιθυμία, ας, ἡ) = Desire (ἐπιθυμίαν κακήν, or "evil desire" = Lust.
- πλεονεξίαν (N. Accusitive Feminie Singular, πλεονεξία, ας, ἡ) = covetousness, avarice, desire for advantage.

6 δι’ ἃ ἔρχεται ἡ ὀργὴ τοῦ θεοῦ ἐπὶ τοὺς υἱοὺς τῆς ἀπειθείας·

"because of these God's wrath is coming on the children of disobedience."

- ἔρχεται (v. present passive indicitive 3rd person singular - ἔρχομαι) = it is coming.
- ἀπειθείας (n. Genitive Feminine Singular, ἀπείθεια, ας, ἡ) = willful unbelief, obstinacy, disobedience.

7 ἐν οἷς καὶ ὑμεῖς περιεπατήσατέ ποτε ὅτε ἐζῆτε ἐν τούτοις· 

"Among whom you also once walked, when you were living in these things."

- περιεπατήσατέ (v. Accusitive Active Indicitive, 2nd Person Plural, περιπατέω) = you walked.
- ποτε (Participle.) = Once
- ἐζῆτε (v. Imperfect Active Indicitive, 2nd Person Plural, ζάω) = You were living

8 νυνὶ δὲ ἀπόθεσθε καὶ ὑμεῖς τὰ πάντα, ὀργήν, θυμόν, κακίαν, βλασφημίαν, αἰσχρολογίαν ἐκ τοῦ στόματος ὑμῶν·

"but now put off all of this: anger, rage, malice, slander, and foul language from your mouth."

- ἀπόθεσθε (v. Accusitive Middle Imperative, 2nd Person Plural, ἀποτίθημι) = Put off
- θυμόν (N. Accusitive Masculine Singular, θυμός, οῦ, ὁ) = an outburs of passion, rage.
- κακίαν (N. Accusitive Feminine Singular, κακία, ας, ἡ) = evil, wickedness, malice.
- αἰσχρολογίαν (N. Accusitive Femine Singular, αἰσχρολογία, ας, ἡ) = foul language.

9 μὴ ψεύδεσθε εἰς ἀλλήλους· ἀπεκδυσάμενοι τὸν παλαιὸν ἄνθρωπον σὺν ταῖς πράξεσιν αὐτοῦ, 

"Don't lie to eachother, since you have stripped of the old self, and its ways."

- ψεύδεσθε (v. Present Middle Imperative, 2nd Person Plural, ψεύδομαι) = Lie
- ἀλλήλους (reciprocal pronoun, accusitive masculine plural,) = one another
- ἀπεκδυσάμενοι (v. Aorist Middle Participle, nominitive Masculine plural, ἀπεκδύομαι) = having renounced, having put off, having stripped.
- παλαιὸν (adj. Accusitive Masculine singular, παλαιός, ά, όν) = old, ancient, worn out.

10 καὶ ἐνδυσάμενοι τὸν νέον τὸν ἀνακαινούμενον εἰς ἐπίγνωσιν κατ’ εἰκόνα τοῦ κτίσαντος αὐτόν,

"and put on the new (self,) which is being renewed in knowledge, according to the image of the one that created it."

- ἐνδυσάμενοι (v. Accusitive Middle Participle, nominitive masculine plural, ἐνδύω) = Having clothed
- ἀνακαινούμενον (v. Present Middle participle, Accusitive masculine singular, ἀνακαινόω) = who is being renewed.

11 ὅπου οὐκ ἔνι Ἕλλην καὶ Ἰουδαῖος, περιτομὴ καὶ ἀκροβυστία, βάρβαρος, Σκύθης, δοῦλος, 

ἐλεύθερος, ἀλλὰ τὰ πάντα καὶ ἐν πᾶσιν Χριστός.

"Where there is no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, Barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all - and in all."

- περιτομὴ (n. Nominitive Feminine Singular, περιτομή, ῆς, ἡ) = Circumcised. This word was translated as an adjectival noun instead of the more awkward noun "circumcision" as in "He is a member of the circumcision."
- ἀκροβυστία (n. Nominitive Feminine Singular, ἀκροβυστία, ας, ἡ) = foreskin, prepuce, used as slang to refer to Gentiles.
- ἐλεύθερος (adj. Nominitive Masculine Singular) = Free

12 Ἐνδύσασθε οὖν ὡς ἐκλεκτοὶ τοῦ θεοῦ, ἅγιοι καὶ ἠγαπημένοι, σπλάγχνα οἰκτιρμοῦ, χρηστότητα, ταπεινοφροσύνην, πραΰτητα, μακροθυμίαν, 

"Therefore, as God's chosen one's holy and beloved, put on compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience;"

- Ἐνδύσασθε (v. Aorist Middle Imperative, 2nd Person Plural - ἐνδύω) = Put on.
- ἠγαπημένοι (v. Perfect Middle Participle, Nominitve Masculine Plural - ἀγαπάω) = beloved.
- σπλάγχνα (N. Accusative Neuter Plural - σπλάγχνα, ων, τά) = bowels, compassion, pity, the inward parts: the heart, affections, seat of feelings
- οἰκτιρμοῦ (N. Genative Masculine Singular - οἰκτιρμός, οῦ, ὁ) = pity, compassion, favor, grace, mercy.
- χρηστότητα (N. Accusitive Feminine Singular - χρηστότης, τητος, ἡ) = goodness, kindness, uprightness, gentleness.
- ταπεινοφροσύνην (N. Accusitive Feminine Singular - ταπεινοφροσύνη, ης, ἡ) = humility, modesty.
- πραΰτητα (N. Accusitive Feminine Singular - πρᾳΰτης, τητος, ἡ) = mildness, gentleness
- μακροθυμίαν (N. Accusitive Feminine Singular - μακροθυμία, ας, ἡ) = patience, forebearance, longsuffering.

13 ἀνεχόμενοι ἀλλήλων καὶ χαριζόμενοι ἑαυτοῖς ἐάν τις πρός τινα ἔχῃ μομφήν· καθὼς καὶ ὁ κύριος ἐχαρίσατο ὑμῖν οὕτως καὶ ὑμεῖς·

"putting up with one another and forgiving eachother. If anyone should have a quarrel with another, just as the Lord has forgiven you, you also should forgive."

- ἀνεχόμενοι (v. Present Middle Participle, Nominitive Masculine Plural - ἀνέχομαι) = bearing with
- χαριζόμενοι (v. Present Middle Participle, Nominitive Masculine Plural - χαρίζομαι) = forgiving
- μομφήν (N. Accusitive Feminine Singular - μομφή, ῆς, ἡ) = a complaint, fault, blame.

14 ἐπὶ πᾶσιν δὲ τούτοις τὴν ἀγάπην, ὅ ἐστιν σύνδεσμος τῆς τελειότητος.
"Morover, above all this put on Love, which is the bond of perfect unity."

- σύνδεσμος (N. Nominitve Masculine Singular - σύνδεσμος, ου, ὁ) = a bond, a bind, that which binds together.
- τελειότητος (N. Genitive Feminine Singular - τελειότης, τητος, ἡ) = perfection, maturity

15 καὶ ἡ εἰρήνη τοῦ Χριστοῦ βραβευέτω ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν, εἰς ἣν καὶ ἐκλήθητε ἐν ἑνὶ σώματι· καὶ εὐχάριστοι γίνεσθε.

"Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which you were called in one body, and be thankful."

- βραβευέτω (v. Present Active Imperitive, 3rd Person Singular - βραβεύω) = let rule

16 ὁ λόγος τοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐνοικείτω ἐν ὑμῖν πλουσίως ἐν πάσῃ σοφίᾳ· διδάσκοντες καὶ νουθετοῦντες ἑαυτοὺς ψαλμοῖς, ὕμνοις, ᾠδαῖς πνευματικαῖς ἐν χάριτι, ᾄδοντες ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν τῷ θεῷ·

"Let Christ's Word dwell in you richly wisely teaching and admonishing eachother in psalms, hymns and spiritual odes, singing to God with gratitute in your hearts."

- ἐνοικείτω (V. Present Active Imperative, 3rd Person singular - ἐνοικέω) = Let Dwell
- νουθετοῦντες (V. Present Active Participle, Nominitve Masculine Plural - νουθετέω) = admonishing
- ᾠδαῖς (N. Dative Feminine Plural - ᾠδή, ῆς, ἡ) = an ode, song.
- ᾄδοντες (v. Present Active Participle, Nominitive Masculine Plural - ᾄδω) = singing.

17 καὶ πᾶν ὅ τι ἐὰν ποιῆτε ἐν λόγῳ ἢ ἐν ἔργῳ, πάντα ἐν ὀνόματι κυρίου Ἰησοῦ, εὐχαριστοῦντες τῷ θεῷ πατρὶ δι’ αὐτοῦ.

"And whatever you do, in word or deed, (do it) all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father, through him."

18 Αἱ γυναῖκες, ὑποτάσσεσθε τοῖς ἀνδράσιν, ὡς ἀνῆκεν ἐν κυρίῳ. 

"Wives, submit to your husbands, as is proper in the Lord."

- ὑποτάσσεσθε (V. Present Passive Imperitive 2nd person plural - ὑποτάσσω) = submit yourselves.
- ἀνῆκεν (V. imperfect active indicitive, 3rd person singular - ἀνήκω) = proper

19 οἱ ἄνδρες, ἀγαπᾶτε τὰς γυναῖκας καὶ μὴ πικραίνεσθε πρὸς αὐτάς.

"Husbands, love your wives, and do not be cruel to them."

- πικραίνεσθε (V. present middle imperative, 2nd person plural - πικραίνω) = be bitter, cruel


20 Τὰ τέκνα, ὑπακούετε τοῖς γονεῦσιν κατὰ πάντα, τοῦτο γὰρ εὐάρεστόν ἐστιν ἐν κυρίῳ. 

"Children obey your parents in all things, for this is pleasing to the Lord."

- ὑπακούετε (V. Present active Imperative, 2nd person plural - ὑπακούω) = listen to, obey
- γονεῦσιν (N. Dative Masculine Plural - γονεύς, έως, ὁ) = Parents

21 οἱ πατέρες, μὴ ἐρεθίζετε τὰ τέκνα ὑμῶν, ἵνα μὴ ἀθυμῶσιν.

"Fathers, do not exhasperate your children, so they may not lose heart."

"Slaves, obey your earthly masters in all things, not just when they are looking, as people pleasers, but sincere hearts, fearing the Lord."

- ἁπλότητι (N. Dative Feminine Singular - ἁπλότης, τητος, ἡ) = sincerity, simplicity, purity, graciousness.

23 ὃ ἐὰν ποιῆτε, ἐκ ψυχῆς ἐργάζεσθε, ὡς τῷ κυρίῳ καὶ οὐκ ἀνθρώποις, 

"Whatever you might do, work with all your heart, for God and not for men."

24 εἰδότες ὅτι ἀπὸ κυρίου ἀπολήμψεσθε τὴν ἀνταπόδοσιν τῆς κληρονομίας· τῷ κυρίῳ Χριστῷ δουλεύετε· 

"knowing that you will receive your due inheritance from the Lord, Jesus Christ, whom you serve."

"For the unjust person will be repaid for the wrong he has done, and there is no partiality."
