Colossians Chapter 4

Chapter 4.  1 Masters, do that which is just and fair to your slaves, knowing that you too have a Master - in Heaven.

Final Instructions

2 Be persistent in prayer: vigilant, with thanksgiving. 3 At the same time, praying for us, that God might open open a door for the Word, to share the mystery of Christ, for whose sake I am in chains. 4 So I might make it clear, as I ought. 5 Conduct yourselves wisely with outsiders, redeeming the time, 6 your speech always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so you might know how best to answer each person.

Final Greetings and Closing of the Letter

7 Tychicus, our beloved brother, faithful servant, and fellow slave in the Lord, will make known to you everything concerning me. 8 This is why I sent him, so that you might know everything about us, and so he might encourage your hearts.  9 Along with him I’ve sent Onesimus, our faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you. They will make everything here known to you.

10 My fellow prisoner Aristarchus greets you, and Mark - the cousin of Barnabas, of whom you have received instructions "if he comes to you, welcome him. 11 and Jesus - called Justus, among the circumcision, these are my only fellow workers for the Kingdom of God, and they have been a comfort to me.

12 Epaphras, who is one of you, greets you. A servant of Christ Jesus, he is always struggling for you in prayer, in order that you might stand, mature and fully assured, in the will of God. 13 Truly, I bare witness to him, that he is greatly concerned about you, and those in Laodicea, and those in Hierapolis.

14 Luke, the beloved physician, and Demas also greet you.

15 Greet the brothers and sisters in Laodicea, Nympha and the church which meets in her house. 16 And when this letter has been read to all of you, have it read to the Laodiceans, and see that you read the letter from Laodicea too. 17 And say to Archipus, 'see that the ministry you received from the Lord, is fulfilled.’

18 This greeting is in my own hand. Remember (me in) my chains. Grace be with you. Amen.

Colossians Chapter 3

Chapter 3  1 So, if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things above, where Christ is sitting, at the right hand of God. 2 The things above, not the things that are on earth. 3 For you died, and your life has been hidden with Christ, in God. 4 When Christ is revealed, your live too will appear with him, in glory.

5 Therefore, put to death earthly desires, sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and covetousness which is idolatry. 6 because of these God's wrath is coming on the children of disobedience. 7 Among whom you also once walked, when you were living in these things. 8 but now put off all of this: anger, rage, malice, slander, and foul language from your mouth. 9 Don't lie to each other, since you have stripped of the old self, and its ways. 10 and put on the new (self,) which is being renewed in knowledge, according to the image of the one that created it. 11 Where there is no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, Barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all - and in all.

12 Therefore, as God's chosen one's holy and beloved, put on compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience; 13 putting up with one another and forgiving each other. If anyone should have a quarrel with another, just as the Lord has forgiven you, you also should forgive. 14 Moreover, above all this put on Love, which is the bond of perfect unity.

Household Codes Adapted for the Church

15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which you were called in one body, and be thankful. 16 Let Christ's Word dwell in you richly wisely teaching and admonishing each other in psalms, hymns and spiritual odes, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. 17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father, through him.

18 Wives, submit to your husbands, as is proper in the Lord. 19 Husbands, love your wives, and do not be cruel to them.

20 Children obey your parents in all things, for this is pleasing to the Lord. 21 Fathers, do not exasperate your children, so they may not lose heart.

22 Slaves, obey your earthly masters in all things, not just when they are looking, as people pleasers, but sincere hearts, fearing the Lord. 23 Whatever you might do, work with all your heart, for God and not for men. 24 knowing that you will receive your due inheritance from the Lord, Jesus Christ, whom you serve. 25 For the unjust person will be repaid for the wrong he has done, and there is no partiality.

Colossians Chapter 2

Chapter 2  1 for I want you to know how great a struggle I am having for you and those in Laodicea, and as many as who have not seen me in person, 2 so their hearts might be encouraged, having been knit together in love, with all the riches full assurance and understanding regarding the knowledge of the mystery of God. Christ, 3 in whom all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden.

Warning Against False Teachers

4 I say this so that no one might deceive you with persuasive speech, 5 for though I am still absent from you in the flesh, I am with you in spirit, rejoicing and seeing your good conduct and the firmness of your faith in Christ. 6 Therefore just as you have received Christ Jesus - the Lord, walk in him: 7 having been rooted in him, and being built up; being established in the faith, just as you were taught – andabounding in it with thanksgiving.

8 See that no one takes you captive through the philosophy and empty deceit of human tradition, according to the elementary principals of the world, and not according to Christ.  9 For in him all the fullness of the Deity dwells bodily. 10 and you are complete in him, who is the head of all rule and authority; 11 And in whom you were also circumcised, with a circumcision made without hands, by the removal of the fleshy body through the circumcision of Christ. 12 Having been buried with him in baptism, you also were raised with him, through the faith of God's Divine Power, who raised him from the dead.

13 And you, being dead in the transgressions and uncircumcision of the flesh, he made alive together with him, having forgiven all of our transgressions. 14 Having blotted out the writing in the decrees against us, he has removed it, having nailed it to the cross. 15 Thus, having disarmed the rulers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them having triumphed over them in him.

16 Therefore, do not let anyone judge you, regarding food, or drink, or with regard to a feast or a new moon or Sabbath, 17 which are a shadow of the things coming, but the substance is Christ. 18 Don't be conned by anyone who delights in humility and the worship of angels, who describes in detail what has seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshy imagination. 19 but detached from the head, from whom the whole body, through the joints and ligaments, supplied and knit together, grows with Godly growth.

Off With the Old, On With the New

20 If you have died with Christ, to the Elemental principles of the world, why as if you were living in the world, do you submit to its decrees 21 (‘do not handle!’ ‘do not taste!’ ‘do not touch!’ )22 the use of which are all subject to destruction? Why do you still live according to the precepts and teachings of men? 23 These appear to be a form of wisdom, in its self-imposed worship, humility, and harsh treatment of the body, but is useless against the gratification of the flesh.

Colossians Chapter 1

Intro

1 Paul an apostle of Christ Jesus, by God’s will, and Timothy our brother. 2 To the holy and faithful brothers (and sisters) in Christ at Colossae. Grace to you, and peace from God our Father.

Thanksgiving and Prayer

3 We give thanks to God the Father of our Lord, Jesus Christ, always praying for you, 4 having heard about your faith in Christ Jesus, and the love that you have for all the Holy Ones, 5 And because of the hope that is stored up for you in the heavens, which you heard about in the True Word - The Gospel, 6 which has come to you. This Gospel is bearing fruit and increasing in the whole world, just as it is among you, since they day you heard and truly understood God's grace. 7 You heard it from Epaphras, our beloved fellow bondservant, who is a faithful servant of Christ, on your behalf. 8 He has made known to us your love in the Spirit.

9 For this reason, ever since we heard of it, we have not stopped praying for you, asking that you might be filled with the knowledge of his will (with complete wisdom and spiritual understanding,) 10 so you can walk in a manner worthy of the Lord: totally delighting him, bearing fruit in every good work, and growing in the knowledge of God, 11 being powerfully strengthened, by his glorious might, for complete patience and joyful endurance, 12 giving thanks to the Father who has made us qualified for the holy one's share of inheritance in the light.

Hymn of Praise to Christ

13 He has delivered us from the dominion of darkness, and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son, Jesus Christ 14 in whom we have redemption - the forgiveness of sins.

15 He is the image of the unseen God, and the Firstborn of all creation. 16 All things were created by him – in the heavens and on the earth; both the seen, and the unseen. Whether thrones, or dominions, rulers or authorities, all things were created by him, and for him.  17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

18 He is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, and Firstborn from among the dead, so that he might hold pre-eminence in all things. 19 because in him, God was pleased in all His fullness to dwell. 20 and by him to reconcile all things to himself, having made peace by the blood of his cross - both on earth and in the heavens.

21 Once you lived, alienated and mentally opposed (to God,) in your evil deeds, 22 but now he has reconciled you in his physical body - through death, to present you before Him (God), holy, spotless, and irreproachable, 23 if indeed you persist in the faith, being grounded and standing firm, not being removed from the hope of the Gospel, which you have heard, which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which, I Paul, have become a minister.

Paul’s Labor

24 Now I rejoice in suffering for you, and I am filling up, in my flesh, that which is lacking of Christ's tribulations, for his body - which is the church. 25 I have become its minister, by God's commission, for your sake, to complete God's Word, - 26 the mystery hidden from ages, and generations, but now made manifest to His holy ones, 27 To whom God desired to reveal the riches of this glorious mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ you - the hope of glory 28 whom we proclaim, admonishing each person, and teaching every person in all wisdom, so that we might present each person complete in Christ. 29 Toward this I work exhaustively, striving according to his divine power working powerfully within me.
