Colossians Ch 2: Translation Work

2:1 Θέλω γὰρ ὑμᾶς εἰδέναι ἡλίκον ἀγῶνα ἔχω ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν καὶ τῶν ἐν Λαοδικείᾳ καὶ ὅσοι οὐχ ἑόρακαν τὸ πρόσωπόν μου ἐν σαρκί,

"for I want you to know how great a struggle I am having for you and those in Laodicea, and as many as who have not seen me in person."

- ἡλίκον (adj-AMS) = "of what size," "how great"
- ὅσοι (rel.pronoun - NMP) = "as many as"

2:2 ἵνα παρακληθῶσιν αἱ καρδίαι αὐτῶν, συμβιβασθέντες ἐν ἀγάπῃ καὶ εἰς πᾶν πλοῦτος τῆς πληροφορίας τῆς συνέσεως, εἰς ἐπίγνωσιν τοῦ μυστηρίου τοῦ θεοῦ, Χριστοῦ,

"that their hearts might be encouraged, having been knit together in love, with all the riches full assurance and understanding regarding the knowledge of the mystery of God - Christ."

- παρακληθῶσιν (V-APS-3P. παρακαλέω = I summon, comfort, encourage.) = "might be encouraged."
- συμβιβασθέντες (V-PAP-NMP. συμβιβάζω = "I unite," "Knit together.) = "having been knit toghther,"
- πληροφορίας (N-GFS. πληροφορία, ας, ἡ) = "full assurance."
- εἰς + Acc = "with respect to" showing reference/respect. = "regarding."

2:3 ἐν ᾧ εἰσιν πάντες οἱ θησαυροὶ τῆς σοφίας καὶ γνώσεως ἀπόκρυφοι.

"in whom all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden."

- θησαυροὶ (N-NMP. θησαυρός, οῦ, ὁ) = A storehouse for precious things, hence "A treasure."


2:4 τοῦτο λέγω ἵνα μηδεὶς ὑμᾶς παραλογίζηται ἐν πιθανολογίᾳ. 

"I say this so that no one might decieve you with persuasive speech."

- παραλογίζηται (V-PSP-3S. παραλογίζομαι: I deceive, beguile, reason falsely, mislead.) = might deceive
- πιθανολογίᾳ (N-DFS. πιθανολογία, ας, ἡ) = Persuasive speech.

2:5 εἰ γὰρ καὶ τῇ σαρκὶ ἄπειμι, ἀλλὰ τῷ πνεύματι σὺν ὑμῖν εἰμι, χαίρων καὶ βλέπων ὑμῶν τὴν τάξιν καὶ τὸ στερέωμα τῆς εἰς Χριστὸν πίστεως ὑμῶν.

"for though I am still absent from you in the flesh, I am with you in spirit, rejoicing
and seeing your good conduct and the firmness of your faith in Christ."

- ἄπειμι (V-PAI-1S. ἄπειμι: I am absent) = I am absent
- χαίρων (V-PAP-NMS. χαίρω: I rejoice, am glad) = (I) rejoicing
- βλέπων (V-PAP-NMS. βλέπω: I look, see, perceive, discern). = (I) seeing.
- τάξιν (N-AFS. τάξις, εως, ἡ: order, position, rank) = a military term, used here to complement the Colossians conduct.
- στερέωμα (N-ANS. στερέωμα, ατος, τό) firmness, steadfastness, constancy.

2:6 Ὡς οὖν παρελάβετε τὸν Χριστὸν Ἰησοῦν τὸν κύριον, ἐν αὐτῷ περιπατεῖτε, 

"Therefore just as you have received Christ Jesus, the Lord, also walk in him,"

- παρελάβετε (V-AAI-2P, παραλαμβάνω: I take from, receive)= "you have received."
- περιπατεῖτε (V-PAI-2P,περιπατέω: I walk, conduct my life)= "walk"

2:7 ἐρριζωμένοι καὶ ἐποικοδομούμενοι ἐν αὐτῷ καὶ βεβαιούμενοι τῇ πίστει καθὼς ἐδιδάχθητε, περισσεύοντες ἐν εὐχαριστίᾳ.

"having been rooted in him, and being built up; being established in the faith, just as you were taught - abounding in it with thanksgiving."

- ἐρριζωμένοι (Perf-M-P-NMP, ῥιζόω: I root, fix by the root) = "having been rooted"
- ἐποικοδομούμενοι (V-PMP-NMP, ἐποικοδομέω: I build upon a foundation) = "being built up"
- βεβαιούμενοι (V-PMP-NMP,βεβαιόω: I confirm, establish, ratify)= "being established in"
- ἐδιδάχθητε (V-API-2P, διδάσκω: I teach "you were taught"
- περισσεύοντες (V-PAP-NMP, περισσεύω: I exceed, abound, overflow)= "abounding"

2:8 Βλέπετε μή τις ὑμᾶς ἔσται ὁ συλαγωγῶν διὰ τῆς φιλοσοφίας καὶ κενῆς ἀπάτης κατὰ τὴν παράδοσιν τῶν ἀνθρώπων, κατὰ τὰ στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου καὶ οὐ κατὰ Χριστόν·

"See that no one takes you captive through the philosophy and empty deceit of human tradition, according to the elementary principals of the world, and not according to Christ."

- Βλέπετε (verb, present active imperative, 2nd person plural - βλέπω) = Watch out. or as I've translated it "keep watch."
- μή (adv.) = Not or Lest.
- διὰ (preposition with the Genative showing means = through)
- συλαγωγῶν (V. Present Active Participle, Nominative Masculine Singular - συλαγωγέω) = takes you captive.
- ἀπάτης (N. Genative Femanine Singular) = Deceit
- παράδοσιν (N. Accusative Femanine Singular) = tradition
- στοιχεῖα (N. Accusative Nominative Plural) = (Elementary) Principles

2:9 ὅτι ἐν αὐτῷ κατοικεῖ πᾶν τὸ πλήρωμα τῆς θεότητος σωματικῶς

"For in him all the fullness of the Deity dwells bodily"

- κατοικεῖ (V. Present Active Indicative, 3P Singular κατοικέω)= (he)Dwells
- πλήρωμα (N. Nominative Neuter Singular) = Fullness (pleroma).

2:10 καὶ ἐστὲ ἐν αὐτῷ πεπληρωμένοι, ὅς ἐστιν ἡ κεφαλὴ πάσης ἀρχῆς καὶ ἐξουσίας, 

"and you are complete in him, who iis the head of all rule and authority"

- πεπληρωμένοι (V. Perfect Passive Participle, Nominatve Masculine Plural - πληρόω) = made complete.

2:11 ἐν ᾧ καὶ περιετμήθητε περιτομῇ ἀχειροποιήτῳ ἐν τῇ ἀπεκδύσει τοῦ σώματος τῆς σαρκός, ἐν τῇ περιτομῇ τοῦ Χριστοῦ

"In whom you were also circumcised, with a circumcision made without hands, in the removal of the fleshy body by the circumcision of Christ."

- περιετμήθητε (V. Aorist Passive Indicative, 2nd Person Plural περιτέμνω) = You were circumcised
- περιτομῇ (N. Dative Feminine Singular) = Circumcision
- ἀχειροποιήτῳ (adg. Dative Feminine Singular) = Made without hands
- ἀπεκδύσει (N. Dative Feminie Singular) = removal

2:12 συνταφέντες αὐτῷ ἐν τῷ βαπτισμῷ, ἐν ᾧ καὶ συνηγέρθητε διὰ τῆς πίστεως τῆς ἐνεργείας τοῦ θεοῦ τοῦ ἐγείραντος αὐτὸν ἐκ νεκρῶν· 

"Having been buried with him in baptism, you also were raised with him, through the faith of God's Divine Power, who rasied him from the dead."

- συνταφέντες (v. Aorist Passive Participle, Nominative Masculine Plural - συνθάπτω) = Having been buried together with.
- συνηγέρθητε (V. Aorist Passive Indicative, 2nd Person Plural - συνεγείρω) = (you were raised with)
- ἐνεργείας (N. Genative Feminine Singular) = divine working
- ἐγείραντος (V. Aorist Active Participle, Genative Masculine Singular - ἐγείρω) = having raised.

2:13 καὶ ὑμᾶς νεκροὺς ὄντας [m]ἐν τοῖς παραπτώμασιν καὶ τῇ ἀκροβυστίᾳ τῆς σαρκὸς ὑμῶν, συνεζωοποίησεν ὑμᾶς σὺν αὐτῷ· χαρισάμενος ἡμῖν πάντα τὰ παραπτώματα

"and you, being dead in the transgressions and uncircumcision of the flesh, he made alive together with him, having forgiven all of our transgressions."

- παραπτώμασιν (N. Dative Neuter Plural) = transgressions
- ἀκροβυστίᾳ (N. Dative Femanine Singular) = uncircumcision
- συνεζωοποίησεν (v. Accusative Active Indicative, 3rd Person Singular - συζωοποιέω) = He has made you alive together
- χαρισάμενος (V. Aorist Middle Participle, Nominative Masculine Singular - χαρίζομαι) = having forgiven.

2:14 ἐξαλείψας τὸ καθ’ ἡμῶν χειρόγραφον τοῖς δόγμασιν ὃ ἦν ὑπεναντίον ἡμῖν, καὶ αὐτὸ ἦρκεν ἐκ τοῦ μέσου προσηλώσας αὐτὸ τῷ σταυρῷ· 

"Having blotteed out the writing in the decrees against us, he has removed it, having nailed it to the cross."

- ἐξαλείψας (V. Aorist Active Participle, Nominative Masculine Singular - ἐξαλείφω) = blotting out.
- χειρόγραφον (N. Accusative Nominative Singular) = handwriting, writing
- δόγμασιν (N. Dative Nominative Plural) = decrees
- ὑπεναντίον (adj. Nominative Neuter Singular) = opposed to, adverse, against
- ἦρκεν (V. Perfect Active Indicative, 3rd Person Singular- αἴρω)= he has taken
- μέσου (adj. Genative Neuter Singular) = in the midst of (way)
- προσηλώσας (V. Acusative Aorist Participle, Nominative masculine singular-προσηλόω ) = having nailed it

2:15 ἀπεκδυσάμενος τὰς ἀρχὰς καὶ τὰς ἐξουσίας ἐδειγμάτισεν ἐν παρρησίᾳ, θριαμβεύσας αὐτοὺς ἐν αὐτῷ.

"[thus] having disarmed the rulers and authorities, he made a public spectacle [of them] having triumphed over them in him."

- ἀπεκδυσάμενος (V. Accusative Aorist Participle, Nominative masculine singular - ἀπεκδύομαι) = having disarmed, stripped, divested
- ἐδειγμάτισεν (V. Aorist Active Indicative, 3rd Person Singular - δειγματίζω) = he made a spectacle of.
- παρρησίᾳ (N. Dative Feminine Singular) = public
- θριαμβεύσας (v. accusative active participle, nominative masculine singular - θριαμβεύω) = having triumphed

2:16 Μὴ οὖν τις ὑμᾶς κρινέτω ἐν βρώσει ἢ ἐν πόσει ἢ ἐν μέρει ἑορτῆς ἢ νουμηνίας ἢ σαββάτων,

"Therefore, do not let anyone judge you, rearding food, or drink, or with regard to a feast or a new moon or Sabbath,"

"Which are a shadow of the things coming, but the substance is Christ."

- σκιὰ (N. Nominative Feminie Singular) σκιά, ᾶς, ἡ = a shadow
- μελλόντων (V. Present Active Participle, Genitive Neuter Plural - μέλλω) coming

2:18 μηδεὶς ὑμᾶς καταβραβευέτω θέλων ἐν ταπεινοφροσύνῃ καὶ θρησκείᾳ τῶν ἀγγέλων, ἃ ἑόρακεν ἐμβατεύων, εἰκῇ φυσιούμενος ὑπὸ τοῦ νοὸς τῆς σαρκὸς αὐτοῦ, 

"Don't be conned by anyone who delights in humility and the worship of angels, who describes in detail what has seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshy imagination."

- καταβραβευέτω (V. Present Active Imperative, 3rd Person singular - καταβραβεύω) = let defraud.
- ταπεινοφροσύνῃ (N. Dative Feminie Singular) ταπεινοφροσύνη, ης, ἡ, = humility, modesty.
- θρησκείᾳ (N. Dative Feminie Singular)θρησκεία, ας, ἡ = worship
- ἑόρακεν (V. Perfect Active Indicative, 3rd Person Singular - ὁράω) = he has seen
- ἐμβατεύων (V. Present Active Participle, Nominative Masculine Singular - ἐμβατεύω) = describing
- εἰκῇ (adv.) Vainly

2:19 καὶ οὐ κρατῶν τὴν κεφαλήν, ἐξ οὗ πᾶν τὸ σῶμα διὰ τῶν ἁφῶν καὶ συνδέσμων ἐπιχορηγούμενον καὶ συμβιβαζόμενον αὔξει τὴν αὔξησιν τοῦ θεοῦ.

"but detached from the head, from whom the whole body, through the joints and ligaments, supplied and knit together, grows with Godly growth."

- κρατῶν (V. Present Active Participle, Nominative Masculine Singular - κρατέω) = lay hold of, obtain
- ἁφῶν (N. Genitive Feminine Plural) ἁφή, ῆς, ἡ = Joints
- συνδέσμων (N. Genitive Masculine Plural) σύνδεσμος, ου, ὁ = Ligaments
- ἐπιχορηγούμενον (V. Present Middle Participle, Nominative Neuter Singular - ἐπιχορηγέω) = being supplied
- συμβιβαζόμενον (V. Present Middle Participle, Nominative Neuter Singular - συμβιβάζω) = being knit together
- αὔξει (V. Present Active Indicative, 3rd Person Singular - αὐξάνω) = it grows

2:20 Εἰ ἀπεθάνετε σὺν Χριστῷ ἀπὸ τῶν στοιχείων τοῦ κόσμου, τί ὡς ζῶντες ἐν κόσμῳ δογματίζεσθε· 

"If you have died with Christ, to the Elemental principles of the world, why as if you were living in the world, do you submit to its decrees?" 

- ἀπεθάνετε (V. Aorist Active Indicative, 2nd Person Plural - ἀποθνῄσκω) = you have died
- στοιχείων (N - Genative Neuter Plural) στοιχεῖον, ου, τό = element, principal
- ζῶντες (V. Present Active Participle, Nominitive, Masculine, Plural - ζάω) = Living
- δογματίζεσθε (V. Present Passive Indicative, 2nd Person Plural - δογματίζω) = you subject yourself.

2:21 Μὴ ἅψῃ μηδὲ γεύσῃ μηδὲ θίγῃς,
"Do not handle! do not taste! do not touch!
- ἅψῃ (V. Aorist Middle Subjunctive, 2nd Person Singular - ἅπτομαι) = do not handle
- γεύσῃ (V. Aorist Middle Subjunctive, 2nd Person Singular - γεύομαι) = do not taste

"the use of which are all subject to destruction, according to the precepts and teachings of men."

2:23 ἅτινά ἐστιν λόγον μὲν ἔχοντα σοφίας ἐν ἐθελοθρησκίᾳ καὶ ταπεινοφροσύνῃ καὶ ἀφειδίᾳ σώματος, οὐκ ἐν τιμῇ τινι πρὸς πλησμονὴν τῆς σαρκός.

"which truly appears to be a form of wisdom, in its self imposed worship, humility, and harsh treatment of the body, but is useless against the gratification of the flesh."

- ἅτινά (Relative Pronoun, Nominative Neuter Plural) ὅστις, ἥτις, ὅτι = which
- ἐθελοθρησκίᾳ (N. Dative Feminine Singular) = ἐθελοθρησκεία, ας, ἡ = arbitrary or self-imposed worship
